Jeanie's Email:
I received info from my friend in Virginia who had done the Idol program.
Here's what I learned:
- They called it "school name" Book Idol.....like Eisenhower Book Idol.
- The program took 4-6 weeks.
- Object is to introduce students to a variety of books, encourage reading and involve students in active discussions of their favorite books... and to find the favorite book for the school.
- The program started during Love a Book Month (February) and ended up during National Library Week in April.
A letter went out to English teachers with this info:
- Students are issued a ballot through their English classes to nominate their two favorite books for consideration for the winning Book Idol. The nomination forms are attached to the letter. A deadline was given for returning the forms.
- Classes sign up to come to the library for a "Book Look" activity. Students will take a look at the nominated books. During this time they judge each book to determine if it will move on to Hollywood.
- Sixteen books move on to Hollywood.
- Following the Book Looks, students are issued a ballot during their English class with 8 books listed and asked to vote to move a favorite book to the final round.
- During the final week, students are asked to vote for the winner. Ballots are sent out to English teachers.
